A production order is a work order with a quantity on it
The difference between a maintenance work order and a manufacturing work order is that the manufacturing one has a number of pieces on it. Everything else follows from that. The header names the part number and revision, the quantity to produce, the sales or stock order it is being made against, and the lot or batch number that the finished goods will carry. Without those four the paperwork cannot answer the two questions a manufacturer actually gets asked: how much did this run cost per piece, and which parts in the field came off this lot.
Write the revision, not just the part number. A shop that runs BRK-2210 for three years will run it to four different prints, and a traveler that says only "BRK-2210" is a traveler that eventually builds the wrong one. The revision on the order and the revision on the print in the operator's hand should be checked against each other at the first operation, and the person who checked should be on the form.
The bill of materials and the routing are the two tables
Materials issued to the order go in the parts table: raw stock by the sheet, bar, or pound, purchased components by the piece, and the finishing and consumables that a run genuinely eats. Quantity matters more here than on a service work order, because it is what makes the per-piece math honest — nine sheets across 250 parts is a real material cost per bracket, and a run that issues twelve sheets because two were scrapped in setup is a different cost that you want to see rather than absorb.
The routing goes in the labor table, one line per operation, in sequence, with the work center named and the hours split. Op 10 shear, op 20 press, op 30 weld, op 40 finish, op 50 inspect. Keep setup visible — it is the single biggest reason small runs cost what they do, and a shop that blends setup into run time will keep quoting short runs as though they were long ones. Different work centers usually carry different rates, and separate lines let those rates coexist on one order instead of averaging into a number that describes nothing.
Scrap, lot traceability, and what the closed order proves
Record the quantity started and the quantity accepted, and put the difference somewhere with a reason. Scrap that is charged to the lot tells you which operation is losing parts; scrap that quietly disappears into overhead tells you nothing and shows up later as a yield problem nobody can locate. Three parts lost at the weld fixture is a tooling note today and a fixture rebuild next quarter — but only if the number is on the order.
Lot traceability is the reason a manufacturing work order outlives the run. Carry the material heat or lot number from the raw stock onto the order, and the order's lot number onto the packing list, and a customer question about a bracket that cracked in the field resolves to a specific coil of steel and a specific shift. Regulated sectors require that chain; everyone else discovers they wanted it the first time a recall question arrives. Close the order with the completion date, the accepted quantity, and an inspection sign-off, and the document becomes proof that the parts you shipped were made to the print you were given.
